How does a train stop by pulling the chain?
According to the report of The Hindu website, the chain fitted in the coach of the train is connected to the main brake pipe of the train. Absolute pressure is maintained in this pipe. As soon as the chain is pulled, the valve in the brake air pipe opens and air is released. Due to this, the air pressure in the brakes starts decreasing and this slows down the train. Loco pilot always keeps monitoring the pressure meter, he can see this change in pressure. After this he blows the horn three times and stops the train. This is a signal to the guards and security personnel present in the train that the chain of the train has been pulled and due to this the train has been stopped. When a train moves at high speed, it takes a few minutes to stop so that it does not derail.

Why don’t passengers get off the train after stopping it anywhere?
Now coming to the second question that if this facility is so easily available to the passengers, then why don’t they stop the train and get down at those stations where the train does not have any stoppage, i.e. if someone’s house is near a small station. , But the train does not have to stop at that station, so why doesn’t someone pull the chain and get down there? Although this kind of behavior has been done by passengers for years, due to which there is a lot of danger, but it should not be done. Actually, the system of pulling the chain is provided only in emergency situations. When there is a fire in the train, any health emergency, any criminal incident taking place in the train, or any accident occurs while boarding or deboarding the train. Apart from all these situations, if someone just tries to get down by pulling the chain, then under Section 141 of the Railway Act 1989, that person can be sentenced to 1 year in jail, a fine of Rs 1,000 or both.
